P2: TITLE - GENERATE IDEAS FOR A NEW INTERACTIVE MEDIA PRODUCT FOR A CLIENT BRIEF
Purpose
The purpose of my app is to inform people of the town this may include a small History of the town and inform them of upcoming events, for example, if people are new to Cambridge and don't know what they can do while they are here my app would have an events page where people can find information and links to events. In addition it could especially help tourists because it will introduce various places of interest and help tourists explore the community and helps them locate things to do and places to meet people and have fun. This is in direct response to the brief set by the client. This app will also be free to download to help Cambridge to become known.
Client Needs
My client is the Cambridge City Council. The council want to use the advancements in modern technology and want to use these to advertise Cambridge and inform people of what is available to do and places to go in Cambridge . The council have asked for a new interactive multimedia product to be developed that can be viewed on a number of devices. I have chosen to create an app that targets people, especially tourists that are either on holiday to Cambridge to see the landmarks or here to stay and need to know where are good places to go within Cambridge.
The client has specifically wants and stated that the app must :
Raise the profile of Cambridge on the internet
Be a source of information for locals about what events are happening.
To make sure that my app does this I will make sure that my app is available to Apple devices and can raise the profile of Cambridge by being available on different platforms online and offline. Also the app will provide hyperlinks to different events or places in Cambridge and it will raise all the different profiles of different places and events in Cambridge.
It will be up to date with information about different events in Cambridge and give you information such as location, date and time, what kind of event it is as well as a link to the event page incase you need to pay for tickets or make any type of payment.
Target Audience
For my app I think that my target audience will be bother male and females, who are aged between 20-45. I feel that may be in middle or high class with well paid jobs. They most likely would have a steady job and have steady income. They perhaps are travelling with family or friends or just their partners, there is a chance they may live within the UK but it is more likely that they are going to be from abroad. I feel that their interests would that they may like to travel and learn new things maybe they like to learn about the history of places.
Target Audience Needs
My target audiences needs are to know how to navigate my app and they would need my app to be simple to understand, this is because most of my target audience would be from a different country therefore English would not be their first language and that is why I would need to have simple terms, layout and content. There would need be wide variety of options/choices for things to do on a visit as not everyone is looking to do the same thing in their free time. For example, providing options such as outdoor hikes or fairs etc for those who like the outdoors or for those who like going on rides and having fun.
Content Ideas
In my app is going to include a homepage and the homepage includes four menus, these menus are the ‘About Cambridge’ and within this it is going to include the ‘History of Cambridge’ which tells you about the History ofCambridge hence the name. The About Cambridge tab will also include the tab ‘Events in Cambridge’ which tells you all about festivals and other events and all the information on them like the date and time what it is about and how much it costs if it costs anything. Back on the homepage there will be a 'Map of Cambridge' tab and when you press it shows you a map of Cambridge with pins pinpointing specific places that are popular to go to like Cambridge University, the GrandArcade, where the punting is etc.My final menu on my app is going to be my game, the game is going to include the audience having to find landmarks around Cambridge and take a picture of them and upload them on to app, if you get them all than you can put your score on the app and you will be on the top of leaderboard.
Format
The format my app will be is on the iPhone 7, the latest Apple phone. I feel that once my app works on the iPhone7 it will be simple to get them to work on all Apple products. Another reason it is on the iPhone is the fact that nowadays everyone has a mobile phone in particular an iPhone and if people from abroad want to download the app before the come to Cambridge the iPhone is a great platform to get it on, and because I am making for an iPhone it would be familiar for the audience to use because they are used to using apps.
Platform budget
I will have to create this application on a low budget. I would need a few people to help me with the creation of this application, but because I have a low budget I will need to do a lot of it myself. A coder would cost around about £40 an hour, but as this is a really simple app to create, I will do this myself. Also, if I wish to use photos, I will either need to hire a photographer or gain permission for photos I wish to use. I could take the photos myself, but they wouldn't look as professional. To host my application, I will need to hire a hoster. These can have a price range of around £2 up to £10, which isn't very much. Also, my app could have other people claiming rights or copying it, to stop this I will need to apply for aPatent. To get one of these I will need to approach the government and apply for one. I couldn’t find a cost for a Patent but there is one.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
When developing my graphic user interface I need to take into consideration that my app will be seen by a large audience so in need to be understood, for example when developing my icons for my app I need to make them a simple design that is recognised by different ethnicities and I need to make them uncomplicated as it needs to be the same on different platforms.
Commercial Considerations
There are a lot of opportunities for advertising, I could have a company sponsor your app so that every time the app loads the company that has sponsored me is there, companies that might stand to benefit from the app might be local to Cambridge businesses or events, even a link to Cambridge University could appear. Companies could pay to have the top spot advertising space on my home page, this gives me a huge revenue stream for them and it would be better to add the link to the website. Advertising happens within the app through my events page and the links but this is subtle, but I could add deals to the events like if you invite your hole family you could get 25% off. Companies should pitch to be apart of the app because it is free to download and this could raise the profile of Cambridge and there business or event.
Accessibility
The accessibility of my app:
The app itself will hopefully be accessible through the app store on an iPhone specifically the iPhone 7
Once you download the app you see the home page there will be 4 main options to choose from. The 'About Cambridge' button, the 'Gallery' button, the 'Map of Cambridge' button, and the 'Game' button.
If you press the 'About Cambridge' button it will send you to a page that has 2 options, a 'History of Cambridge' button and it is about the history of Cambridge when you press the button. There is also and an 'Events in Cambridge button that send you to a page that has information on the events that might be going on in Cambridge and events that will happen in the near future.
Back on the home page if you click the 'Gallery' button it will send you to a gallery of pictures both professional and amateur, if you scroll down below the pictures I am thinking about adding a 'upload your own photo' and the app will access your camera and you can take a photo. Even further below that there will be a comment section below so that people can talk about each others photos.
Back again to the home page, if you click on the 'Map of Cambridge' button it will send you to a page that has a live link to google maps it is a map of Cambridge that has pin points on them of places to go in Cambridge and when you click on the pin point it has information on each place.
When you go back on the home page the is finally a 'Game' button, this button sends you to a page that has the title of the game 'Find the Landmark' and you press start and then you go around Cambridge.
Interactivity
The Interactive parts on my app:
MAP PAGE: One of my interactive elements will be a map page which you can interact with meaning you can zoom in and out, it would be a map of Cambridge which will be seen because it will say Cambridge and may have a pin on it.
EVENTS PAGE: Another interactive element would be an events page which would be a page with information on different and upcoming events in Cambridge, it will include information such as date, time and what the event is, there will also be a hyperlink to the website where you could then pay the event if need be or find out more information.
HISTORY PAGE: My next page is a small history of Cambridge tab and this is for the user to get a little background information on Cambridge.
FOOD PAGE: My next page is like my events page instead it has information on different restaurants within Cambridge and a hyperlinks to the restaurants website if you want to book it online. There could also be deals/voucher for these places.
HOME PAGE: My home page is going to be where you can start navigating through the different tabs.
EXPLAIN THE LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES RELATING TO PRODUCT IDEAS
Legal
Copyright
The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act gives creators the right to control in the ways their material may be used, which means that for my product I must make sure that I don't take any ideas from other apps.
It is the same with images, as I must make sure that they are not copyrighted and to use copyright free images. If the images are, I must contact the copyrighted owner and ask permission to use their materials in my product. I would most likely have to credit and reference the artist of the images to avoid running into legal issues.
The buttons I will be using will be of my own creation from the software but if I was to use buttons of an app without permission, I could be held responsible for stealing someone's work.
Libel
I must watch out for libel because of my about Cambridge section of my app I talk about the history of Cambridge and if I ever get any facts wrong about CambridgeI could get in trouble for telling false information about Cambridge and therefore it will be defamation of character.
I also have an events page which could potentially involve libel because if I give any false information about any events such as the price are, what it is about, what time it is etc, I could again get in trouble for libel because it is defamation of an event.
Intellectual property rights
I will be creating an app which include a brand name, a design and the content but because I am working for a client, he or she will have intellectual property over the app and will have the rights to decide what to do the product.
To protect the product, i could apply a patent act this is a government license that grants the right to create and sell the product without others doing the same.
Personal data protection
Data Protection largely applies to the registration part of my app, even though people don't need to register on my app they can if they want to. However, I am aware that because I am collecting personal information I have to follow the Data Protection Act of having the data processed for limited purposes, hold information securely and not transfer the information out of the EU without protection. If I fail to do this, I could be expected to pay a fine for braking the Data Protection Act law.
Identity theft
Cyber stalking
Ethical
Misrepresentation
Decency
To avoid any decency issues I must not have any inappropriate images or other content that has no relation to the app's purpose.
JUSTIFY THE PLANNED INTERACTIVITY AND RANGE OF MEDIA CONTENT TO MEET A CLIENT BRIEF
App portfolio
This is what my app icon on the iPhone will look and the edges will be curved when I code my app it will automatically be done for me.
The first page is the loading page.
The font on my loading page is Cantaneo BT which has an old english/calligraphy look to it which is what I want in an app like this.
The loading bar is there because it is to show people that the page content is loading.
The background is orange because it represents the fact that it will be around summer when this app is released so the orange is like a warm summery vibe.
The Cambridge crest in the background is to obviously show you this app is about Cambridge and that it represents Cambridge.
The second page is the home page
The font on my home page is Capitals which is easy to read and bold which is good for users.
The colour blues is there to represent the Cambridge colour which is blue.
The pattern in the background is there to make the app look more aesthetically pleasing and to give the app more of a regal look.
