P3: TITLE -DESCRIBE THE MULTI PLATFORM DISTRIBUTION METHODS
What is the difference between FM, AM, MW and DAB?
The difference between FM, AM, MW and DAB radio are frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, medium wave and Digital audio broadcasting. AM and MW are the cheapest versions of DAB and FM radio but the quality is not as good as DAB and FM. Most radio stations are FM because it is still good quality and cheaper than DAB but not as good as DAB. DAB is more expensive and that is why DAB is less common than FM.
FM: Stands Frequency Modulation MW: Stands for Medium Wave. AM: Stands for Amplitude Modulation DAB: Stands fro Digital Audio Broadcasting
What is the pros and cons of DAB radio? How does it impact on FM, AM and MW?
Pros:
Clearer sound
Truer sound
Cons :
Expensive equipment for both parties
Latency in transmitting, the DAB broadcast is 2 seconds behind AM & FM
What would you rather listen to? Why?
I would rather listen to DAB radio because the sound comes out much clearer therefore it is better quality. This enhance my radio experience as I will be hearing in better quality.
VOX POPS
The questions I asked these people
How do you listen to radio? What do you think is the most common way to listen to radio? Which radio stations do you like to listen to? What do you think are the most listened to stations? What do you think people look fro in terms of presenter, music, content and style?
I created these Vox pops to find out about current listenership and radio distribution among the public, especially younger listeners such as students.
M2: TITLE - EXPLAIN THE PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED IN PRODUCING A RADIO BROADCAST
We took a trip to Heart Cambridge to find out how they create their Radio shows and watched them do a live broadcast and phone call.
Equipment
Microphone Microphones are designed to be placed fairly close to the presenters mouth they are needed for a radio show because its what records such high quality sound of the presenters voice. Heart's Mics are very noticeable because of the bright red pop shield around the mic for clearer sound, most mics will have a pop shield attached to it to reduce the 'pops' that occur when a strong 'p' is said however these mic's don't need it because the outer layer is so thick
Headphones Headphones are needed because they allow the presenters to hear exactly what is being broadcast and whether anything is wrong like a hiss or drone that shouldn't be. He or she can also check the volume levels of the songs, jingles, voices, beds and whatever the listener can hear.
Workstation and Faders/Mixing desk The workstation is very important because it has everything that the presenters need to control to make the show possible. There are the microphones, tv's, mixing desk, computers etc. It is organised in a way that is very easy for the presenter to use so that they know where everything is and it is in the best place.
Speakers The speakers are set up all over the radio station including the offices. Speakers are important because it makes sure the radio show is sounding good and so that everyone at the station knows where the show is at in terms of timings and if they're staying on track and if they need to set something up soon.
